About Tech House

Tech house runs on a tight, muscular low end and a cool, metallic drum sound. Kicks land with weight, basslines tend to feel rugged and insistent, and the percussion often has that steely snap associated with techno. Over that engine, it keeps house’s sense of swing and groove, leaning on looping patterns that lock dancers into a steady, hypnotic push rather than big melodic payoffs.

The name grew out of record-store shorthand for tracks that sat between techno and progressive house. It pulled in techno’s minimal, clean production approach, with roots tied to the Detroit and UK strains of techno, then married that restraint to the harmonies and rolling momentum of progressive house. The result is dance music that feels functional and streamlined, built for long blends and gradual tension.

Compared with straight house, tech house usually sounds tougher and more stripped back, with fewer vocal hooks and less emphasis on bright, pop-leaning chords. Compared with techno, it keeps a warmer, more elastic groove and a clearer nod to house’s rhythmic swing. Recent examples from producers like Chris Lake, Cloonee, and Mau P capture the style’s balance of chunky bass pressure, crisp drums, and patient, DJ-friendly arrangement.
