Microhouse runs on restraint: tight, dry drum programming, clipped hi hats, and basslines that move in small, hypnotic increments. Instead of big drops or hands-in-the-air hooks, it leans on micro-edits, negative space, and the subtle swing of shuffled percussion. Tiny vocal snippets, clicks, and foley-like textures often sit where other house styles would place a lead, giving tracks a tactile, close-mic feel that rewards careful listening as much as dancing.

It sits in house music but pulls hard from minimalism and 1990s techno, so the groove tends to be more skeletal and linear than classic deep house or disco-leaning sounds. Compared with minimal techno, microhouse usually keeps a warmer, more sensual pocket and a clearer house pulse, even when the arrangement stays spare. Nicolas Jaar’s early work shows how microhouse can feel intimate and off-kilter without losing the beat, while DJ Koze leans into playful detail and slow-building momentum. Gui Boratto offers a more melodic, polished angle that still fits the genre’s preference for precision over excess.
