Progressive House Artists

At roughly 120 to 130 BPM, progressive house uses long-form arrangement, gradual layering and extended breakdowns to turn a house groove into a slow-building arc. Kick drums stay steady, while basslines, chord sequences and melodic synth parts are introduced piece by piece; peaks tend to arrive through accumulation rather than abrupt drops. Tracks often leave room for tension, release and a sense of motion across several minutes.

The style emerged in the United Kingdom in the early 1990s, developing from late-1980s North American and European house music. Its name points less to a fixed sound than to that incremental method: elements shift, filters open, percussion thickens and motifs return in altered form.

Compared with deep house, progressive house usually puts more emphasis on forward drive and dramatic arrangement than on swing, soul or stripped-back warmth. It is generally less hard-edged and repetitive than techno, and its transitions are more patient than the compact build-and-drop patterns associated with much EDM. Melodic house and melodic techno overlap with its atmospheric synth writing, but progressive house keeps the four-to-the-floor house pulse and the gradual journey at the centre.
