L.A.-based producer, composer, and DJ Matt Lange brings forth a dark, melodic style of electronic music infused with raw energy and emotion. Personally selected by deadmau5 for his mau5trap label, the lifelong musician debuts with the groove-rich and intricately layered album, Ephemera. As his first project for mau5trap, the title Ephemera reflects the innovative spirit present in Lange's artistry. Lange describes the album as a snapshot of his current artistic state, balancing between dance music and exploring new directions.

Mixmag notes Lange as having more musical inclination in his pinky than most producers' entire collections. Ephemera showcases his creative daring and meticulous craftsmanship at the heart of his sound. Lange states his music is always "handmade," with most tracks originating on guitar, piano, or modular synthesizer, using no outside material to ensure a personal connection to his work. While the album ranges from atmospheric club tracks like “My Love Aside” to the intimate, vocal-driven “Lying to Myself,” a moody intensity permeates all of Ephemera. "I’m not very good at writing bright, happy music,” Lange admits. “I need an underlying sense of melancholy to truly immerse myself in the song.”

Raised in Manhattan, Lange began playing piano at age four and sang in a boy’s choir from six to 13, later joining a hardcore/metal band on guitar. His interest in production began at 15 to make demos for his band, altering his musical relationship. After studying music production at Boston’s Berklee College of Music and drawing inspiration from groups like Hybrid and Telefon Tel Aviv, Lange co-produced BT's Grammy-nominated album These Hopeful Machines. Lange then pursued solo work, releasing the Staccato EP in 2014, creating diverse official remixes, and producing Glenn Morrison’s platinum-certified "Goodbye." Performing at festivals like EDC Las Vegas and TomorrowWorld and being named VIBE.com's #1 DJ to watch in 2014 led deadmau5 to include Lange's tracks “Scorched Earth Policy” and “Nice Shades, Wesley” in We Are Friends compilations.

Despite exploring various genres and paths over the years, Lange has held fast to certain principles. “As I matured, the best tracks were those created without worrying about others' opinions,” he says. “People sense music that reflects your truth, so the key is to be honest and pursue what you love and find most intriguing.” Lange ties this honesty to his creative process and musical style. “Electronic music liberates you to utilize anything,” he says. “Merging live instruments to create a sound caught between worlds is where I thrive. Imagination is the only real boundary.”
