Nervous Records
Nervous Records grew from New York’s underground house and hip-hop worlds, founded in 1991 by Mike Weiss and his father, Sam Weiss. Before starting Nervous, Mike Weiss had revived Sam Records, the Disco Era imprint founded and led by his father. Frankie Crocker encouraged him to establish a label under his own identity. Its name came from hip-hop DJ Chuck Chillout, who called Weiss “Captain Nervous” for his wiry energy, while Marc Cozza designed the label’s cartoon-character logo. DJ Mag has described that logo as an iconic image in the record business.
From its New York base, Nervous became a home for house music with a deep club focus. Its releases have included work by Todd Edwards, Masters At Work, Armand Van Helden, Todd Terry, Frankie Knuckles, Kerri Chandler, Louie Vega, youANDme, Harry Romero and David Morales, connecting the label to several generations of dance-floor producers and DJs. Weiss remains the label’s president and also performs under the name Mike Nervous.
The label’s reach into hip-hop was equally central in its early years. Through its Wreck subsidiary, Nervous released Black Moon’s Enta Da Stage, Smif-N-Wessun’s Dah Shinin’ and Mad Lion’s Real Ting, three albums widely regarded as essential hip-hop releases. That history gives Nervous an identity that extends beyond house music, even as dance records have remained its primary focus.
Nervous is described as America’s longest-standing independent dance music record label. Since 2024, it has released between three and five titles a week, while also landing Beatport number-one records with Loofy’s “Last Night,” Mau P’s “The Less I Know The Better” and Vinter’s “Space Pump (Space Jam).” Its newer roster includes artists such as Mochakk, Joni, Nicole Fiallo, Kry (IT), Erick Gaudino, Oba Frank Lords and Oscar G.
The label also produces nightclub events in New York, with shows at venues including Brooklyn Mirage, Superior Ingredients and Silo. In 2024, long-serving Nervous employee Andrew Salsano was appointed vice president of the label.
