Nervous Records
Nervous Records is an American record label known for its focus on underground house and hip hop. It was founded in 1991 and is based in New York City, a setting closely tied to the label’s musical identity and to the scenes it has documented and promoted.
The label was founded by Mike Weiss and his father, Sam Weiss. Before establishing Nervous Records, Mike Weiss revived his father’s earlier imprint, Sam Records, in 1989. The move toward a new label identity followed advice from radio personality Frankie Crocker, who encouraged Weiss to start a label under his own name rather than continuing solely under the revived Sam Records banner.
The name “Nervous” is linked to New York’s hip hop community. According to the label’s origin story, hip hop DJ Chuck Chillout gave Mike Weiss the nickname “Captain Nervous,” a reference to his high-strung, energetic demeanor, and the label took its name from that moniker. The label’s logo was designed by Marc Cozza, establishing a visual identity that became closely associated with its releases.
Across its catalog, Nervous Records has been associated with artists whose work reflects its house and hip hop orientation. In underground house, figures such as Louie Vega and Oscar G illustrate the label’s connection to club-focused dance music, while other artists including Nicole Fiallo, Kry (IT), Oba Frank Lords, Ray MD, Torre & Lords, and Marcos Carnaval appear among the names tied to the label’s output. The label’s public presence is centered through its official website, nervousnyc.com.
