Ninja Tune is an independent record label founded in 1990 by musicians Matt Black and Jonathan More, the duo known as Coldcut. Established as an outlet for Coldcut to explore a style distinct from the mainstream music industry, the label has been closely associated with left-field electronic music and related hybrid forms, reflecting its origins in producer-led experimentation and DJ culture.

Based in London, Ninja Tune also maintains a satellite office in Los Angeles. From the outset, it functioned as a platform for music that sat outside conventional commercial expectations, aligning the label’s identity with artist-driven releases and a broad interpretation of electronic music. Its early direction was shaped by Coldcut’s background as musicians and producers, and by an interest in approaches that drew on hip-hop, electro, and sample-based production without being confined to a single genre.

Over time, Ninja Tune’s catalog and public profile have come to encompass a wide range of contemporary electronic and adjacent sounds, from club-oriented productions to more song-based work. The label’s roster has included artists whose music reflects that breadth, including ODESZA, Nilüfer Yanya, Barry Can’t Swim, Machinedrum, salute, Ben Böhmer, TSHA, and DJ Seinfeld. Rather than representing one uniform style, these artists illustrate Ninja Tune’s emphasis on distinctive production voices and its willingness to release music that crosses between dance music, electronic pop, and experimental forms.

While Ninja Tune is often discussed in terms of its artist community and curatorial approach, its core identity remains tied to its founding purpose: providing a dedicated home for music developed outside mainstream industry constraints. With operations centered in London and an additional base in Los Angeles, the label has continued to operate as an independent imprint built around the creative priorities of its founders and the varied directions of the artists it releases.
