Ninja Tune

Ninja Tune is an independent record label founded in 1990 by musicians Matt Black and Jonathan More, the duo known as Coldcut. Established as an outlet for Coldcut to explore a style distinct from the mainstream music industry, the label has been closely associated with left-field electronic music and related hybrid forms, reflecting its origins in producer-led experimentation and DJ culture.

Based in London, Ninja Tune also maintains a satellite office in Los Angeles. From the outset, it functioned as a platform for music that sat outside conventional commercial expectations, aligning the label’s identity with artist-driven releases and a broad interpretation of electronic music. Its early direction was shaped by Coldcut’s background as musicians and producers, and by an interest in approaches that drew on hip-hop, electro, and sample-based production without being confined to a single genre.
