Indie Pop Artists

Late-1970s British post-punk musicians paired guitar-pop melody with a DIY approach to making and circulating music, laying the basis for indie pop. Its early infrastructure included small labels, fanzines, clubs and gig circuits, with the music tied as much to independent practice as to a fixed instrumental recipe.

Indie pop generally favours direct tunes, lightness and melodic detail over the sharper attack associated with indie rock. Guitars remain central, but they serve hooks, chiming figures and compact song forms rather than abrasion or heaviness. The mood can be wistful, playful or intimate without needing rock's usual tension and release. That relative lack of angst separates it from much indie rock, while its DIY roots distinguish it from the polished style and posture often associated with mainstream pop.

The term later widened beyond its original British setting, covering pop-minded groups from otherwise separate DIY movements. Chamber pop and twee pop sit within that broad family, each taking the emphasis on melody in different directions: one toward more elaborate arrangements, the other toward a deliberately delicate, uncomplicated feel.
