Singer-Songwriter Artists

Singer-songwriter music puts the writer’s own voice and songs at the centre, often with little more than a guitar or piano for support. Rather than separating performer, composer and lyricist, it brings those roles together in one person, so the delivery can feel closely tied to the words and melody.

In the United States, the form grew from folk’s acoustic tradition, especially the voice-and-guitar setup. It has since moved through pop, rock, indie and alternative music without losing its basic premise: songs written and performed by the same musician. Arrangements can be sparse or fully produced, but the writing remains the focus.

Personal subject matter is common, from direct confession to detailed storytelling, and a solo accompaniment can carry an entire track.
