Sufjan Stevens is a singer-songwriter and musician from Detroit, Michigan. He started releasing music on the Asthmatic Kitty label, which he co-founded with his stepfather, beginning with the 2000 album A Sun Came. He is most renowned for his 2005 album Illinois, which topped the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart and received Gold certification from the RIAA in 2017. His most famous track is “Chicago” from that album.

He is also part of Danielson, alongside Daniel, Elin, Andrew, David, Lenny, Ida and Lilly Smith, Megan and Jedidiah Slaboda, Rachel Galloway, and Christiaan and Melissa Palladino. Elin, Daniel, and Megan have provided backing vocals for several of his tracks, and Daniel has worked as a producer for Sufjan.

Previously, he was a member of Marzuki (named after his brother, Marzuki Stevens), which included Shannon Stephens, Jamie Kempkers, and Matthew Haseltine.

Apart from albums, Sufjan has scored the film “Eve” (directed by Natalie Portman) and composed three songs for “Call Me By Your Name” (directed by Luca Guadagnino). He has also collaborated with Justin Peck on several ballet scores and worked on numerous documentaries by his friend and filmmaker Kaleo La Belle, including “Crooked River” (focusing on Sufjan and Marzuki), “Beyond This Place,” and “Fell in Love with a Girl.”

Stevens currently lives in Brooklyn, New York.
