About Folk

During the mid-20th-century folk revival, contemporary folk developed from older traditional repertories and reached a high point in the 1960s. It brought folk material into a popular-music setting while retaining a link to songs and practices passed between generations. In common U.S. usage, both the older tradition and this newer revival-derived music are called folk, even though they aren't the same historical form.

Traditional folk is less a fixed sound than a way music circulates and endures. Songs may be learned orally rather than from formal scores, performed on traditional instruments, and altered as communities carry them forward. Many pieces have no known composer. Their subjects can draw on folklore, local custom, or cultural and national identity, and variation isn't an exception but part of the music's life. This long-term, communal transmission distinguishes traditional folk from music chiefly organized around commercial release or classical composition.

Contemporary folk usually works as authored popular music, but it often shares performers, venues, repertoire, and an acoustic-minded directness with traditional practice. The genre can include material closely connected to inherited song forms as well as new writing shaped by the revival. Its borders are therefore porous: singer-songwriter music may overlap with folk through personal, song-led writing, while folk rock and folk metal combine folk elements with the instrumental language and volume of rock or metal. “Folk” can also sit beside the broad label of world music, though neither term identifies one uniform style.

The appeal lies in that range. Folk can preserve a song through custom, recast it for a new generation, or use its methods to frame a newly written piece. Rather than referring to one tempo, production style, or instrument, the term connects music to inherited repertoire, oral exchange, and the ongoing changes that occur when songs move from person to person.
