Professional songwriting and recording craft drove pop rock’s late-1950s emergence from rock and roll. The music keeps rock’s basic beat and instrumental framework, but gives melody, arrangement and a cleanly constructed song form greater weight than a rougher, attitude-led rock approach. Early records also drew on doo-wop and the rhythmic feel of the beat, placing vocal hooks and polished arrangements close to the centre of the sound.

Pop rock sits on the line between pop and rock rather than fully leaving either behind. Its songs can retain guitar-led drive and rock-and-roll momentum while aiming for the direct melodic appeal associated with pop. Compared with many rock styles, it places less emphasis on confrontation or rawness; compared with dance pop or electropop, its foundations remain in rock instrumentation and song structure. It’s a broad category, spanning music that leans toward concise pop songwriting as well as records that keep a firmer rock edge.
