Def Jam Recordings

Def Jam Recordings helped take hip-hop from New York’s streets into the centre of the music business. Founded in 1983 by Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin, the Manhattan-based label became a home for rap while also working across contemporary R&B, soul and pop. It is now an American multinational label owned by Universal Music Group.

Its early rise is closely tied to artists whose records expanded rap’s commercial and cultural reach. LL Cool J, Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys were central to Def Jam’s formative identity, each approaching hip-hop from a different angle: LL Cool J with direct, charismatic rap records; Public Enemy with politically charged work; and the Beastie Boys with their crossover appeal. Later artists including Redman and DMX carried that lineage into subsequent eras of the label’s history.

Def Jam’s roster has never been limited to one rap sound. Its releases have also made room for R&B and pop-oriented artists, a breadth reflected in more recent names including Muni Long, Teyana Taylor, Masicka, Chase Shakur, Jastin Martin, Connie Diiamond, SAHXL and Genia. The label remains rooted in New York, but its operation extends beyond the United States. 0207 Def Jam, its London-based UK arm, operates through Polydor Records, while Def Jam Africa has bases in Johannesburg and Lagos.

From its beginnings under Simmons and Rubin, Def Jam developed into a global label whose history is inseparable from hip-hop’s movement into mainstream popular music, while retaining space for R&B, soul and pop artists alongside rap.
