Def Jam Recordings
Def Jam Recordings is an American multinational record label associated primarily with hip-hop and closely related strains of contemporary R&B, soul, and pop. Based in Manhattan, New York City, it is owned by Universal Music Group and is widely identified with the commercial rise and mainstream visibility of rap music in the United States.
The label was founded by Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin. Early Def Jam releases helped define a hard-edged, DJ-and-MC-driven approach to hip-hop that contrasted with more pop-oriented rap of the period, and the imprint soon became a focal point for rap’s crossover into the broader music industry. Over time, Def Jam’s scope expanded beyond its early hip-hop core to include contemporary R&B and pop, while maintaining a roster and brand identity rooted in rap and Black popular music.
Def Jam’s history is also marked by shifts in corporate ownership and label-group structures. It entered a period of major-label distribution through Columbia/CBS Records, later operating amid changes tied to CBS’s transition into Sony Music Entertainment. Subsequent ownership changes included PolyGram acquiring stakes in Def Jam’s holdings, followed by Universal Music Group’s consolidation of those interests after the MCA–PolyGram merger. Def Jam’s assets were later folded into Island Def Jam Music Group, before Universal Music dissolved that group and repositioned Def Jam as a standalone label alongside Island Records and Motown.
Across its catalog, Def Jam has been associated with prominent hip-hop artists including Public Enemy, LL Cool J, the Beastie Boys, Redman, and DMX, names often cited as emblematic of its early and 1990s-era identity. In more recent activity reflected in its tracked releases, the label’s roster continues to span rap and R&B, with artists such as Muni Long and Masicka illustrating its contemporary reach across styles and scenes, alongside newer names including Chase Shakur, Jastin Martin, Connie Diiamond, Genia, SAHXL, and NyneWolf.
