
Universal Music Group
Universal Music Group N.V. is a Dutch-American music corporation and the world’s largest music company. Operating under Dutch law, it is one of the “Big Three” record labels alongside Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group. The company’s corporate headquarters are in Hilversum, Netherlands, and its operational headquarters are in Santa Monica, California.
Universal Music Group was formed in December 1996 by Seagram. After acquiring MCA Inc. in April 1995, Seagram renamed MCA Music Entertainment Group as Universal Music Group. In 1998, Seagram acquired PolyGram and subsequently merged it with Universal Music Group, a consolidation that was completed in early 1999.
In the 2020s, Universal Music Group’s ownership and corporate structure drew wider attention as it prepared to become a publicly traded company. Tencent acquired a ten percent stake in March 2020 for €3 billion and increased its holding by an additional ten percent in January 2021. Pershing Square Holdings later acquired ten percent of UMG ahead of its public listing. The French Bolloré family retained a 28 percent stake. Universal Music Group went public on September 21, 2021, listing on Euronext Amsterdam at a valuation of €46 billion.
