Established in 1990 in Seattle, Pearl Jam is one of the most successful bands emerging from the grunge movement and a significant influence on the alternative rock scene of the early 90s.

It all started with Green River, a Seattle band formed in 1984 with Jeff Ament, later joined by Stone Gossard. Upon their breakup in 1988, Ament and Gossard formed Mother Love Bone with Malfunkshun singer Andrew Wood, a band on the brink of success until Wood's untimely death from a heroin overdose. After recruiting drummer Dave Krusen and California vocalist Eddie Vedder, they initially called the band Mookie Blaylock, later renaming it Pearl Jam, and signed with Epic Records. Their debut album, Ten, was released in 1991 and quickly became one of the most successful debut albums of its time.

Discomforted by their success, subsequent albums featured a more anguished and experimental sound. The band's activism became particularly notable when they boycotted Ticketmaster, accusing them of exploiting fans with high prices. During this period, the band went through several drummers until Soundgarden’s Matt Cameron joined them for the tour of 1998’s Yield.

With a total of 10 studio albums and numerous live recordings, including "Official Bootlegs" of virtually every concert since 2000, Pearl Jam has sold almost 32 million records in the U.S. and an estimated 60 million worldwide.
