David Bowie (1947–2016) was a British musician, renowned as a legendary rock star with a versatile career marked by constant changes in appearance and musical style. His acclaimed discography stands alongside those of The Beatles and Bob Dylan.

Bowie's impact and legacy are immense—he shaped genres like glam, disco, new wave, grunge, and industrial music, along with influencing fashion. His influence is especially evident among other flamboyant and androgynous performers such as Gary Numan, Prince, Lady Gaga, and St. Vincent, though his impact on modern pop music is widespread.

In 1966, David Robert Jones adopted the surname "Bowie" (like a Bowie knife, or a Jagger) to avoid association with teen idol Davy Jones. Despite early setbacks, his music gained traction with “Space Oddity,” which was used in the BBC’s coverage of the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing.

The single climbed to #5 on the UK charts following his Top of the Pops performance. The sci-fi theme of the song, featuring the character Major Tom, hinted at his future 1972 breakthrough. Until then, Bowie was more of a cult figure. 1971’s album, *Hunky Dory*, was mostly overlooked despite being his first Major RCA release.

By early 1972, Bowie drew significant attention, laying the foundation for a new genre. His alter-ego, an androgynous alien, highlighted his musical brilliance rather than masking it. Inspired by the punk rock performance of Iggy Pop and the aloof artistry of Lou Reed, Ziggy Stardust became the lead in his conceptual breakthrough album and a public persona that followed him. Ziggy’s “fall” in the album’s plot took an ambiguous direction, influencing *Aladdin Sane*’s broader musical strokes without a conceptual framework, ultimately framing Ziggy as an iconic figure.

Bowie harnessed his newfound fame to relocate to America, experimenting with new musical paths and cocaine use. Albums like *Diamond Dogs* and *Young Americans* remain divisive among critics, but *Station To Station* marked a creative pinnacle, even amid rising drug use and health concerns.

Returning to Europe enabled Bowie to achieve even greater musical success. He recorded the iconic “Berlin Trilogy” – *Low*, *“Heroes”*, and *Lodger* (with Brian Eno and Tony Visconti; only *Heroes* was recorded in Berlin), and produced Iggy Pop’s first two solo albums. This was followed by the rock-heavy *Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)* and disco-infused *Let’s Dance*.

During the 1980s, Bowie experienced a period of critical neglect as albums like *Tonight* and *Never Let Me Down* were not well-received overall, despite hit singles. His collaboration with the band Tin Machine—a "garage-band" rock project—led to a resurgence with albums such as *1. Outside*, *Earthling*, *Heathen*, and *Reality*, re-establishing him as a top pop star. There was a lengthy hiatus in the 2000s, until he unexpectedly released *The Next Day* in 2013 to critical acclaim.

David Bowie passed away on January 10, 2016, from cancer, two days after his 69th birthday and the release of his final album, *Blackstar*.
