Incubus

Incubus broke into the mainstream with “Drive,” the US Top 10 single from 1999’s Make Yourself, an album certified double platinum in the United States. Formed in 1991 at Calabasas High School in California, the band began with vocalist Brandon Boyd, guitarist Mike Einziger and drummer José Pasillas. Bassist Alex “Dirk Lance” Katunich and turntablist Gavin “DJ Lyfe” Koppel later expanded the lineup.

The group’s early records, Fungus Amongus (1995) and S.C.I.E.N.C.E. (1997), preceded the commercial breakthrough of Make Yourself. Incubus moved through funk metal, alternative metal, rap-influenced rock and more melodic alternative rock across that period, with Koppel’s turntable work part of the band’s earlier sound. Koppel was later replaced by DJ Kilmore, while Ben Kenney succeeded Katunich on bass. Nicole Row replaced Kenney in 2024.

Incubus sustained its success with Morning View in 2001 and A Crow Left of the Murder... in 2004, both of which debuted at number 2 on the US Billboard 200. Their sixth studio album, Light Grenades (2006), became the band’s first album to debut at number 1 in the US. The 2009 compilation Monuments and Melodies collected their hits, followed by the seventh studio album If Not Now, When? in 2011, which debuted at number 2 in the US.

The band released the EP Trust Fall (Side A) in 2015, then issued its eighth studio album, 8, on April 21, 2017. A second EP, Trust Fall (Side B), arrived on April 17, 2020. As of October 2022, Incubus had generated 12.4 million US album consumption units and sold more than 23 million records worldwide. Their award recognition has included nominations from the Billboard Music Awards, American Music Awards and Grammy Awards.
