Legacy Recordings
Legacy Recordings is Sony Music Entertainment's catalogue label, created in 1990 after Sony acquired CBS Records. Its original role was to handle the archives of Columbia Records and Epic Records, placing it in charge of recordings associated with artists including Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Prince, Willie Nelson and David Gilmour.
The label's work is built around preserving and reissuing material from major American and international recording catalogues rather than operating as a conventional artist-development imprint. In 2004, during the Sony BMG joint venture, Legacy's archive remit expanded to include RCA Records, J Records, Windham Hill Records, Arista, LaFace, Jive and Buddah Records. This brought together music from pop, rock, soul, country, jazz and other styles under one catalogue operation.
Legacy also distributes Philadelphia International Records and the catalogue of recordings produced by Phil Spector. The label is an American Sony Music division and is unrelated to the former British independent label called Legacy Records.
