Legacy Recordings is Sony Music’s catalog label, created to curate and reissue recordings from some of the company’s most significant imprints. Established in 1990 following Sony’s acquisition of CBS Records, it began as the division responsible for managing the archives of Columbia Records and Epic Records, positioning it as the primary home for preservation, compilation, and catalog-focused releases drawn from those labels’ histories.

Over time, Legacy’s remit expanded as Sony’s corporate structure changed. In 2004, during the Sony BMG joint venture, Legacy took on archival management for additional Sony-controlled catalogs, including RCA Records, J Records, Windham Hill Records, Arista, LaFace, Jive, and Buddah Records. This broadened scope reflects the label’s function as a centralized steward for a wide range of recordings spanning multiple genres and eras, rather than a label built around signing and developing new artists.

Legacy Recordings also serves as a distributor for Philadelphia International Records and handles the catalog of recordings produced by Phil Spector. These responsibilities further underline its role in maintaining and circulating historically important bodies of work within Sony’s wider ecosystem, bringing together material associated with distinct scenes, producers, and label identities under a single catalog-management umbrella.

The label is not connected to the defunct British independent label Legacy Records. Legacy Recordings operates as a division of Sony Music and is identified as an American record label in that capacity.
