Geffen Records is an American record label founded in 1980 by David Geffen. It began as a music subsidiary of his then film company, Geffen Pictures, and launched with financial and distribution support from Warner Bros. Records. Over time, Geffen became part of a larger corporate structure and is now owned by Interscope Geffen A&M (IGA), a division of the Interscope Capitol Labels Group within Universal Music Group.

Across its history, Geffen has been associated with a wide range of popular music, spanning rock, alternative, and mainstream pop, as well as hip-hop and contemporary Latin-leaning releases. The label’s roster has included landmark rock and alternative acts such as Nirvana, Weezer, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, reflecting its long-standing role in guitar-driven music. At the same time, Geffen’s identity has also encompassed major pop and crossover artists, including Nelly Furtado and Camila Cabello, illustrating its presence in radio-oriented and chart-focused repertoire.

In more recent eras, Geffen has continued to operate within contemporary pop and hip-hop, working with artists such as Ice Spice and KATSEYE, alongside newer international-facing names like Young Miko. Taken together, these artists point to a label that has not been confined to a single genre or audience. Instead, Geffen has functioned as a broad-spectrum imprint within the major-label system, balancing established rock legacies with current pop and rap releases under the umbrella of Universal Music Group’s Interscope-affiliated operations.
