Geffen Records began in 1980 as the music subsidiary of David Geffen’s film company, Geffen Pictures, with financial and distribution support from Warner Bros. Records. Founded by Geffen, the company was initially known as The David Geffen Company, a name it used until 1992. It then operated as Geffen Records Inc. from 1993 to 2004.

The label’s history has been tied to several major shifts in the American music business. MCA Music Entertainment acquired Geffen in 1990; MCA later became part of Universal Music Group through acquisitions involving Panasonic and Seagram. In 1999, Geffen merged into the Interscope Geffen A&M group and became a syndicate label within Interscope Records. Its catalog subsequently grew through the absorption of other imprints.

Geffen’s artist history spans rock, pop and electronic music, with releases associated with Nirvana, Weezer, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Crystal Method, Nelly Furtado and Camila Cabello. More recent activity includes releases by KATSEYE. The label expanded in 2003 and was relaunched in 2017, continuing to function as a platform for new releases within the wider Interscope organization.

As of 2024, Geffen is owned by Interscope Geffen A&M, part of Universal Music Group’s Interscope Capitol Labels Group. Its legacy links David Geffen’s original entertainment company to a long-running major-label catalog that has moved through Warner Bros., MCA and Universal’s modern label structure.
