Nirvana
Nirvana was arguably the most successful band of the early 1990s grunge scene that originated in Seattle, Washington. Formed in 1987 in the nearby city of Aberdeen, the group was launched into fame four years later with the release of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and their second studio album, September 1991's Nevermind.
They are credited with bringing alternative rock into the mainstream and delivering a blow to '80s hair metal, which was already fading on the charts at the time. In early 1992, Nevermind succeeded in toppling Michael Jackson's Dangerous from the #1 spot on the Billboard charts, securing their place in American music history.
The final lineup of Nirvana included iconic grunge vocalist Kurt Cobain, drummer Dave Grohl, and bassist Krist Novoselic.
The band’s career came to an abrupt end in April 1994, when vocalist Cobain was found dead from an apparent suicide. Drummer Dave Grohl has since found major success as a frontman with the band Foo Fighters. Nirvana continues to have a lasting impact on later generations of fans, much like The Beatles and Black Sabbath.
