Grunge Artists

In mid-1980s Seattle and Olympia, Washington, an underground network centred on the independent label Sub Pop developed the music that became known as grunge. Green River, the Melvins and Mudhoney were among the local groups involved in its formation, alongside bands playing across nearby Pacific Northwest cities. The style grew from a particular regional rock culture rather than a single fixed template, joining punk rock’s abrasion to heavy metal’s weight.

Distorted electric guitars sit at the core, supported by bass, drums and vocals that can carry as much strain as melody. Grunge’s guitar sound draws directly from punk and metal, but its feel also reflects indie rock acts including Sonic Youth, Pixies and Dinosaur Jr. The results can be noisy and forceful without following the polished, virtuoso-driven approach often associated with hard rock. Against alternative metal, grunge is less defined by metal technique than by its rough guitar texture, punk-rooted directness and the uneasy emotional tone of its songwriting.

Its lyrics commonly turn inward, dealing with alienation, self-doubt, betrayal, neglect, addiction, trauma and the wish to escape constraining circumstances. That focus gives the music a personal, sometimes socially alert edge, even when the arrangements are blunt and loud. Grunge became a major branch of 1990s alternative rock, while later post-grunge borrowed parts of its guitar sound and emotional directness. At its clearest, the genre balances heaviness with vulnerability: dense amplified riffs and hard-hit drums carrying songs that don't smooth over anxiety or isolation.
