Playboi Carti
Jordan Terrell Carter (born September 13, 1995), more widely recognized as Playboi Carti, is an American musician originating from Atlanta, Georgia.
Carti started his music career in 2010 under the name Sir Cartier—a play on his surname, reflecting his budding passion for fashion and luxury brands. In May 2013, he changed his name to Playboi Carti and became part of Awful Records. The production of Carti’s early works was mainly done by Ethereal, an in-house producer for Awful Records, which helped him build a local fan base. He often collaborated with his family friend and fellow Zone 3 rapper UnoTheActivist on tracks like “Whole Thang” and “Every Since.”
After completing his studies at North Springs High School in 2014, Carti relocated to New York. There, he met fashion influencers Ian Connor and A$AP Bari, who connected him with A$AP Rocky during SXSW in March 2015. Carti later became associated with Rocky’s creative group, AWGE. A month later, in April 2015, Carti released the singles “Broke Boi” and “Fetti,” which emerged as viral hits in the underground rap scene. On September 10, 2016, Rocky revealed during a show that Carti had signed with Interscope Records.
With Interscope and AWGE, Carti launched his eagerly awaited debut commercial mixtape, Playboi Carti, on April 14, 2017. This record featured two of Carti’s most significant singles, “Magnolia” and “wokeuplikethis*,” which brought him into the mainstream spotlight.
Following the success of his debut mixtape, Carti released his first studio album, Die Lit, on May 11, 2018. The album included well-known songs like “Love Hurts,” “Shoota,” and “Poke It Out.” Die Lit showcases the strength of simplicity, with its effortless vibes and mesmerizing flows creating catchy, straightforward tracks. In songs like “FlatBed Freestyle,” Carti experiments with various vocal styles and highlights his Atlanta accent in his delivery.
In 2019, Carti co-founded Opium, his record label based in Atlanta, Georgia.
On December 25, 2020, Carti released his celebrated second studio album, Whole Lotta Red. Initially, the album drew mixed feedback, as many fans felt it didn’t meet their expectations. However, over time and with Carti's continuous performances of the album’s tracks, perceptions shifted significantly. It is now seen as one of the finest modern rap albums.
Carti is currently preparing to release his upcoming third studio album, I AM MUSIC.
