Pop

Shawn Peter Raul Mendes, born on August 8, 1998, in Pickering, Ontario, is a Canadian singer and songwriter. He learned to play the guitar by watching YouTube tutorials during his early years. Initially, he gained popularity through YouTube covers and within a few months amassed millions of followers by singing on the defunct video-sharing platform Vine.

He officially signed with Island Records in May 2014 and released his debut single, "Life of the Party," on June 26, 2014. His first album, *Handwritten*, featuring the hit single "Stitches," reached the top 10 in the U.S. and Canada and number one in the UK. The album was later re-released as *Handwritten Revisited* with four additional tracks, including a collaboration with Fifth Harmony's Camila Cabello, "I Know What You Did Last Summer."

His second studio album, *Illuminate*, produced three hit singles: "Treat You Better," "Mercy," and "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back." The latter single entered the Billboard Top 10 and reached number one on the Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart. In August 2017, Mendes became the first artist under 20 to have three number-one songs on the Billboard Adult Pop Songs chart.
