Shawn Mendes

Shawn Mendes reached the top of the US Billboard 200 with his 2015 debut album, Handwritten, becoming one of five artists ever to debut at number one before turning 18. Born Shawn Peter Raul Mendes on August 8, 1998, he is a Canadian singer, songwriter and musician from Pickering, Ontario. He built his first audience in 2013 by posting song covers on Vine, the short-form video platform.

His online following brought him to the attention of manager Andrew Gertler and Island Records A&R representative Ziggy Chareton, leading to a record deal. Mendes released a self-titled EP in 2014 before Handwritten arrived the following year. Its single “Stitches” reached number one in the United Kingdom and the top 10 in the United States and Canada.

Mendes followed with Illuminate in 2016, another US number-one album. “Treat You Better” and “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” both reached the top 10 in several countries. His 2018 self-titled third album was led by “In My Blood” and debuted at number one in the US, making him the third-youngest artist to earn three number-one albums there.

In 2019, Mendes released “If I Can’t Have You” and “Señorita,” the latter reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. His fourth studio album, Wonder, arrived in 2020 and made him the youngest male artist to top the Billboard 200 with four studio albums. After a musical sabbatical, he returned with his fifth studio album, Shawn, in November 2024. The record explored folk music and received positive reviews from critics, though it was less commercially successful than his previous albums.

His awards include 13 SOCAN Awards, 10 MTV Europe Music Awards, eight Juno Awards, eight iHeartRadio MMVAs and two American Music Awards. He has also received three Grammy Award nominations and a Brit Award nomination. In 2018, Time named Mendes to its annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
