Downtempo Artists

At around 90 BPM, downtempo slows the drive of electronic dance music into a more spacious, atmospheric form. It keeps a defined pulse where ambient music places less emphasis on rhythm, but it doesn’t chase the sustained momentum of house or other club-focused styles. Tracks can linger on texture and mood while the beat remains present enough to hold a groove.

The style emerged from Bristol’s late-1980s UK scene, which produced Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky. Downtempo is a broad umbrella rather than a fixed production formula: trip hop, ambient house, chillwave, psybient and lofi hip hop all fall within its range. Its slower pace suits relaxation settings and the lower-intensity opening or closing stretches of a DJ set, offering rhythmic electronic music without the urgency of the dancefloor.
