Warp Records is a British independent label known for a catalogue that moves between electronic music, experimental work, and guitar-based indie, often with an emphasis on artists who treat production and sound design as central to songwriting. Founded in Sheffield in 1989 by Steve Beckett, Robert Mitchell, and Robert Gordon, Warp became closely associated with forward-leaning electronic music while also developing a broader identity that accommodates rock, hip-hop, and hybrid forms without abandoning its experimental core.

The label’s early reputation was shaped by landmark electronic releases and a roster that helped define a generation of UK and international electronic music. Warp has released records by Aphex Twin, Autechre, Boards of Canada, and Squarepusher, artists frequently cited in discussions of post-rave electronic music and album-oriented experimentation. Over time, the label’s scope widened to include major figures and groups from adjacent worlds, including Brian Eno, Broadcast, Flying Lotus, Maxïmo Park, !!!, Battles, and Grizzly Bear, reflecting an approach that treats genre as porous rather than prescriptive.

Warp’s more recent profile continues that cross-genre thread. Artists associated with the label include Nightmares On Wax and Bibio, both of whom connect electronic production to songcraft and sampling traditions, and Mount Kimbie, whose work bridges club-rooted textures with indie structures. The label has also released music by Oneohtrix Point Never, whose output sits at the intersection of electronic composition and avant-pop, and by Kelela, whose R&B-informed writing is framed through contemporary electronic production. Warp’s catalogue also extends into rap and jazz-adjacent territory through artists such as Danny Brown and Kassa Overall, and into modern UK guitar music with acts like Squid.

Although founded in Sheffield, Warp is later described as being based in London. Alongside its releases, the label has been associated with early experiments in online music retail through Bleep.com, a digital storefront linked to Warp that has offered high-quality downloads and label-related exclusives. A book-length illustrated history of the label, Warp by Rob Young, was published in 2005 as part of the “Labels Unlimited” series.
