Danny Brown

Danny Brown, born Daniel Dewan Sewell on March 16, 1981, broke through in 2011 with the mixtape XXX, a release that drew critical acclaim and widespread attention from online music outlets. Born and raised in Detroit, he had begun rapping young, influenced by his father, a DJ who played hip-hop and house music. Brown started his recording career in 2003 while performing with local hip-hop groups.

During his early career, Brown supported himself by selling drugs. He served eight months in jail in 2007 after violating probation in a drug-related case, then returned to music and self-released a run of mixtapes, including Hot Soup in 2008 and Hawaiian Snow, made with Tony Yayo, in 2010. His debut studio album, The Hybrid, arrived later that year.

After signing with Fool's Gold Records in 2011, Brown's profile rose sharply around XXX. Spin and the Detroit Metro Times named him Artist of the Year, and the non-album single “Grown Up” followed in 2012. His second studio album, Old, was released in 2013 and reached number 18 on the U.S. Billboard 200. The album produced the singles “Dip,” “25 Bucks,” and “Smokin & Drinkin.”

Brown signed with Warp Records in 2016, beginning a period that included Atrocity Exhibition that year and UKnoWhatImSayin? in 2019. Both albums received critical acclaim. In 2023, he released the collaborative album Scaring the Hoes with JPEGMafia, as well as his fifth studio album, Quaranta. Following a period in rehab during which he became sober, Brown released his sixth studio album, the hyperpop-inspired Stardust, in 2025.

Alongside his work as a rapper and songwriter, Brown has worked as an actor and podcaster. He is known for a high-pitched vocal delivery, unconventional fashion, and an experimental approach to hip-hop. MTV described him in 2011 as “one of rap's most unique figures in recent memory,” while the Detroit Metro Times called him “the most eccentric emcee ever born on Detroit soil.”
