Hudson Mohawke

Hudson Mohawke, the stage name of Glasgow-born producer, composer and DJ Ross Matthew Birchard, emerged from the late-2000s wonky movement with a fractured, high-impact approach to hip-hop and electronic production. Born on 11 February 1986, Birchard became a founding member of the UK record label LuckyMe, a platform closely linked to his early work and the wider Glasgow electronic community.

His debut album, Butter, arrived through Warp Records in 2009. He later returned to the label for the solo albums Lantern in 2015 and Cry Sugar in 2022. Across those records and his production work, Hudson Mohawke has worked between electronic music, instrumental hip-hop and rap, bringing dense programming, exaggerated low end and bright synthetic textures to his tracks.

In 2012, Birchard formed TNGHT with Canadian producer Lunice. The duo released its self-titled EP that year, while Birchard also joined Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music production team. His work for the label included contributions to the 2012 compilation Cruel Summer and West's 2013 album Yeezus. He subsequently became a sought-after producer for artists including Kanye West, Pusha T, Drake, A$AP Rocky, Lil Wayne, Anohni and Danny L Harle.

Hudson Mohawke's earlier track “Cbat,” originally released in 2011, found a new audience in 2022 when it became an internet meme and spread widely across social media. The song's revival introduced one of Birchard's most idiosyncratic productions to listeners well beyond its original release period.
