About Future Bass
Future bass took dubstep and EDM trap in a softer rhythmic direction during the 2010s, trading their harsher attack for warmer, less abrasive movement. It remains dance music, but its pull comes from the contrast between bass-weighted electronic production and a smoother, more melodic feel than many adjacent trap or dubstep tracks.
Producers including Rustie, Hudson Mohawke and Lido helped establish the style, before it reached a wider audience in the mid to late 2010s through artists such as Flume and Illenium. Its 2016 breakout placed it alongside pop-facing EDM without reducing it to pop or house: future bass keeps the rhythmic DNA of trap and dubstep, while easing the edges that define those styles. The result is electronic music built for impact without relying on abrasion, balancing club-scale energy with a warmer finish.
