Thundercat
Thundercat first came to prominence as a member of the heavy metal band Suicidal Tendencies, before redirecting his work toward funk, soul, progressive R&B, psychedelia and jazz fusion. Born Stephen Lee Bruner in Los Angeles on October 19, 1984, he is a bassist, singer, songwriter and record producer whose music draws on those styles without staying in one lane.
As a solo artist, Thundercat has released five studio albums. His work with producer Flying Lotus has been a significant part of his career, while his bass playing, vocals and songwriting have also featured on Kendrick Lamar’s 2015 album To Pimp a Butterfly. He shared the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Performance for “These Walls,” a track from that album.
In 2020, Thundercat released his fourth studio album, It Is What It Is, which won the Grammy Award for Best Progressive R&B Album. Rolling Stone has ranked him among the greatest bass players of all time.
