Alternative R&B Artists

By the mid-2000s, alternative R&B had emerged as a stylistic alternative to contemporary R&B rather than a style tied to one fixed beat pattern or production method. It keeps R&B at its centre, but leaves room for electronic production, hip-hop rhythms, pop structure and indie-soul restraint. The result can be more exploratory and varied than a straightforward contemporary R&B record.

Music journalists have used the term for work that sits outside the mainstream R&B lane while still relying on its vocal phrasing, emotional focus and rhythmic pull. Frank Ocean helped bring the style to wider prominence, while artists including SZA and The Weeknd showed how broadly its sound could stretch. Alternative R&B is less a strict formula than a space for R&B songwriting and vocals to meet less conventional arrangements and textures.
