Death Row Records
Death Row Records is an American record label closely identified with 1990s West Coast hip-hop, known for releasing multi-platinum albums that helped define the era’s mainstream sound and image. The label rose to prominence through blockbuster releases by West Coast-based artists including Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and 2Pac, becoming widely recognized as one of the most commercially successful hip-hop imprints of its time. At its peak, Death Row was reported to generate more than US$100 million annually.
The label was founded in 1991 by The D.O.C., Dr. Dre, Suge Knight, and Dick Griffey. Based in Los Angeles, Death Row became synonymous with a hard-edged, high-profile strain of West Coast rap that dominated popular culture through the 1990s. Its catalog from that period is frequently cited as central to the label’s reputation, with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and 2Pac serving as the most visible examples of the roster that drove its commercial breakthrough.
Death Row’s later history has included changes in ownership. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2006 and was auctioned in 2009 to WIDEawake Entertainment Group, Inc. Subsequent corporate transitions followed, including eOne’s acquisition of rights to the label’s catalog in 2013. In 2022, Snoop Dogg announced that he had acquired Death Row from MNRK Music Group and that the label was being revived, with his album BODR released the following day.
In addition to its legacy artists, Death Row’s more recent activity has involved a broader roster that includes names such as Tha Dogg Pound, October London, and others associated with the label’s contemporary output. Across its different eras, Death Row Records has remained most strongly associated with West Coast hip-hop and the multi-platinum releases that established its profile in the 1990s.
