With a record 35 Grammy Awards, Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter is one of popular music’s most awarded artists. Born in Houston on September 4, 1981, she first rose to prominence in the late 1990s as the lead singer of Destiny’s Child, one of the best-selling girl groups in history. Her solo debut, Dangerously in Love (2003), became one of the best-selling albums of the 21st century and launched a run of US Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles that included “Crazy in Love,” “Baby Boy,” “Check on It,” “Irreplaceable,” and “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).”

After Destiny’s Child disbanded in 2005, Beyoncé released the funk-inflected B’Day in 2006 and expanded her screen work with a role in Dreamgirls that same year. She later portrayed Etta James in the 2008 biopic Cadillac Records. Her 2008 double album I Am... Sasha Fierce moved further into pop, while 4 (2011), released after she formed the management company Parkwood Entertainment, drew on traditional R&B and soul.

Her 2013 self-titled album, Beyoncé, combined electronic influences with an unannounced release and accompanying visual material. The project helped popularize surprise and visual albums and inspired the adoption of Friday as Global Release Day. Lemonade (2016), an eclectic album that prompted sociopolitical discussion, was the best-selling album of that year. Across these records and her live work, Beyoncé has been recognized for vocal ability, artistic reinvention, and performance.

Her ongoing trilogy project began with Renaissance (2022), a queer-inspired dance album that produced the US number-one single “Break My Soul.” Its second installment, Cowboy Carter (2024), is an Americana-rooted country record that produced another US number one, “Texas Hold ’Em.” Both albums highlight overlooked contributions by Black pioneers to American musical and cultural history. Beyoncé has sold an estimated 200 million records, is the Recording Industry Association of America’s most-certified female artist, and remains the only woman whose first eight studio albums each debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200. She has also received a Primetime Emmy Award and a Peabody Award, and was the first woman to headline an all-stadium tour.
