In African American communities during the 1940s, rhythm and blues emerged as a name for a hard-driving strain of jazz-rooted popular music. Its early recordings put rhythm at the front: firm backbeats, blues-derived vocal phrasing and an insistence that later fed directly into rock and roll. The name initially sat close to blues, then widened as electric blues, gospel and soul began to meet in the same records.

Classic R&B bands of the 1950s through the 1970s commonly worked with piano, guitar, bass and drums, often adding saxophones and backing singers. That setup could deliver a rough, danceable groove or a slower ballad with room for a lead voice to bear down on the lyric. Songs have addressed romance, disappointment, ambition and economic pressure, alongside experiences of racism and oppression, freedom and joy in African American life. By the 1970s, R&B had also become an umbrella for soul and funk, linking it to soul’s vocal intensity and funk’s concentrated rhythmic drive without reducing either style to the same thing.

Since the late 1980s, contemporary R&B has brought those foundations into a more studio-shaped sound, drawing on jazz, soul, funk, disco, blues and electronic production. It may use programmed drums, layered harmonies and polished keyboards where earlier bands relied more visibly on live rhythm sections and horns. The Weeknd’s work reflects the electronic side of the modern style, while Alicia Keys’s piano-led recordings point back to its soul and band-oriented vocabulary. R&B remains broader than pop’s hook-first approach and less tied to hip hop’s rap delivery, though both regularly overlap with it. Its center is the relationship between vocal expression and groove: melodies can be intimate, rhythmic or expansive, but the beat still carries the song.
