Roadrunner Records
Roadrunner Records is a Dutch-American record label identified primarily with heavy metal and hard rock. Founded in the Netherlands in 1980, it became widely associated with metal’s international expansion in the 1980s and 1990s, when it was regarded as one of the genre’s most influential independent labels. Its catalog and reputation were built around heavy and extreme styles as well as more mainstream hard rock, and it developed a profile as a home for metal acts that were sometimes described as innovative or controversial.
In its early decades, Roadrunner largely operated as a European-facing label, frequently issuing metal releases in Europe that were licensed from other companies. During this period it was linked to a broad range of metal subgenres, and its roster included acts such as Sepultura, King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, Obituary, Death, Deicide, Pestilence, and Gorguts. Roadrunner also used the name Roadracer Records for markets outside Europe until the end of the 1980s, after which the Roadracer imprint also began appearing in Europe.
By the 1990s, Roadrunner’s direction shifted toward more commercial metal and hard rock, a change that was reported to have alienated some of its heavier and more extreme artists. Even with that evolution, the label continued to be a major platform for metal and hard rock releases and remained closely identified with the genre’s mainstream visibility. Later-era Roadrunner activity has included high-profile projects such as Roadrunner United, which was framed as a label-spanning metal initiative and was followed by a live concert event.
Roadrunner’s corporate status changed in the 2000s. Warner Music Group announced a deal to acquire a majority stake in the label in December 2006, with the acquisition completed in January 2007 following regulatory approval in Germany. Warner later fully acquired Roadrunner in November 2010. The label is now a division of Warner Music Group and is based in New York City. Cees Wessels, Roadrunner’s founder, served as CEO until April 2012, when the Dutch office was shut down.
In the 2020s, Roadrunner was described as a smaller operation than in its earlier peak years, with many of its major acts no longer on the roster. Even so, the label continues to be associated with metal and hard rock, and its name remains tied to a long history of prominent releases and artists, including later-generation acts such as Slipknot, Motionless In White, and Theory of a Deadman.
