Joji
George Kusunoki Miller (Japanese: ジョージ・ミラー, born September 18, 1992), better known as Joji, is a producer and singer based in New York, signed to 88rising. His artist name is derived from the Japanese pronunciation of “George,” reflecting his Australian-Japanese heritage.
He initially gained attention through comedy skits on YouTube under the name DizastaMusic, with his first major recognition arriving in 2011 when he uploaded a video leading to his persona Filthy Frank. This persona became popular for its bizarre and boundary-pushing content, earning him a massive YouTube following.
Joji's music career began as a side project to his comedy work, starting in 2015 with music releases on his private SoundCloud account. In January 2016, he made the account public and released two singles from his project Chloe Burbank Volume 1: “you suck charlie" and "thom.” He continued to release material on SoundCloud.
In April 2017, Joji released “i don’t wanna waste my time,” speculated to be from a forthcoming project. By October 2017, he released “will he,” confirming it as the lead single from his debut EP, In Tongues, which was released on November 3, 2017. Prior to the EP's release, he shared three previously unreleased tracks under Lost Instruments.
On December 29, 2017, Joji announced his retirement from comedy, including Filthy Frank videos, citing concerns for his mental and physical health. However, he planned to focus on other projects.
In 2018, he worked with various artists and released tracks like “Midsummer Madness” and “Peach Jam” with BlocBoy JB. Later that year, on October 26, 2018, Joji released his debut studio album BALLADS 1, with the single “SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK” becoming one of his most successful tracks.
His second studio album, Nectar, was released on September 25, 2020, featuring earlier singles like “Sanctuary” and “Run,” both achieving moderate success.
In June 2022, Joji returned with the release of “Glimpse of Us," achieving his highest chart position to date, reaching #1 in countries such as Australia, Indonesia, Lithuania, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, and Singapore, and entering the top ten in multiple other regions, including his first top ten entry on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.
Joji has also released two comedic albums and various other lighter songs under the alias Pink Guy. Pink Guy’s music is separate from Joji’s main discography and can be found separately.
