Grimes

Art Pop

Grimes is the stage name of Claire Elise Boucher, a singer-songwriter and experimental electro-pop producer. Her music is noted for its 80s-inspired synths, pop sensibilities, and high-pitched, ethereal vocals that often recede into the background.

After releasing her debut albums, Geidi Primes and Halfaxa, in 2010 with Arbutus Records, and a shared record with d'Eon titled Darkbloom in 2011, she grew her fanbase and garnered significant attention. This attention led to a contract with the label 4AD and the release of her third album, Visions, in 2012, which she fully produced using Garageband. The album received widespread critical acclaim and further propelled Grimes into the spotlight. By the end of 2013, she had signed a management deal with Roc Nation and, after several stand-alone releases, unveiled Art Angels in 2015. This album once again demonstrated Boucher's exceptional skill, incorporating catchy choruses that she warped and stretched to explore new musical possibilities.

Fueled by passion, diverse influences, and a distinct confidence, Grimes' music captivates and challenges her listeners both emotionally and psychologically. Her discography showcases her evident versatility, featuring feminist club anthems, "escaping into art" themes, politically charged tracks about sexual assault, and lyrics exploring numb artistry. Her inability to read sheet music does not detract from her work's quality; she independently produces and engineers all her tracks.
