By the early 1960s, soul had carried gospel’s call-and-response singing and R&B’s rhythmic drive into secular popular music, while retaining the vocal intensity of church music. It emerged from African-American communities across the United States in the late 1950s and early 1960s, combining gospel, rhythm and blues, and jazz. Handclaps, emphatic rhythms and a lead singer answered by backing voices give many records their physical lift. The voice is central: singers stretch phrases, add improvised turns and wordless sounds, and use a tense, forceful delivery that can make a polished arrangement feel immediate.

Soul’s emotional directness separates it from straight R&B, even where the two share tempos, instrumentation and song forms. Gospel-derived phrasing gives the music its sense of testimony and exchange, while jazz can enter through melodic flexibility and instrumental colour. The genre also became a vehicle for African-American cultural identity and pride. Ray Charles and Sam Cooke were among the figures involved in its early development, while Aretha Franklin’s recordings show how a commanding lead vocal and responsive ensemble can turn a song into a sustained conversation.

The term covers several regional and stylistic approaches rather than one fixed arrangement. Motown’s version leaned toward concise, rhythm-led pop songs; Southern soul drew more heavily on Southern gospel and a hard-driving R&B feel. Memphis soul often favoured a glossy, sensual atmosphere, while Philadelphia soul expanded the palette with orchestral arrangements and doo-wop-informed vocals. By the late 1960s and early 1970s, some musicians moved toward funk’s tighter rhythmic emphasis, while others incorporated psychedelic or progressive rock elements. Neo soul, which developed around 1994, brought modern production and hip-hop influence to the genre’s vocal and harmonic foundations.
