ATO Records

ATO Records, short for According to Our Records, is an American independent label founded in 2000 by Dave Matthews and his manager, Coran Capshaw. Based in New York City, the label has built a roster that moves comfortably between rock, roots music, soul, indie pop, blues, folk and experimental work, with artists whose records tend to keep songwriting and band interplay in focus.

My Morning Jacket is among the label’s best-known longstanding artists, while the roster has also included Alabama Shakes and Brittany Howard, Black Pumas, Brandi Carlile, Drive-By Truckers, Old 97’s, Okkervil River, Blind Pilot and Hurray for the Riff Raff. Those names place ATO alongside guitar-led rock, Southern-rooted songwriting, Americana and independent singer-songwriter music, without limiting it to any one of those lanes.

The label’s catalogue also reaches into instrumental and international music through Rodrigo y Gabriela, the reggae of SOJA, the R&B-inflected work of Nick Hakim and the bluesy soul of Neal Francis. Acts including King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Primus, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Amyl and the Sniffers, Benjamin Booker, Margaret Glaspy, Mattiel, Joseph, Lee Ann Womack, J Roddy Walston and the Business, and They Are Gutting a Body of Water reflect the breadth of its independent roster. More recent names connected with ATO include Brigitte Calls Me Baby and Friko.

ATO also operates TBD Records, a sublabel founded in 2007. Across its artist roster, ATO has remained a New York-based independent home for established groups, solo writers and newer acts working across several strands of contemporary American and international music.
