The Phenomenal Handclap Band
Formed in New York’s East Village by producer Daniel Collás, The Phenomenal Handclap Band built its early work around a broad cast of collaborators. Its 2009 self-titled full-length debut featured Aurelio Valle, Carol C, Jaleel Bunton, Jon Spencer and Lady Tigra. The group toured the United States and the United Kingdom with Bryan Ferry in 2011, before releasing its second full-length album, Form and Control, on February 13, 2012.
After a four-year hiatus, the band returned in May 2017 with “Traveler’s Prayer,” backed with “Stepped Into the Light,” issued through Magnifreeq, its own Daptone Records imprint. “Judge Not” followed in autumn 2018 as the group’s first release for Toy Tonics, with three further singles arriving over the next two years. The third studio album, PHB, was released in May 2020.
In June 2020, The Phenomenal Handclap Band wrote and performed “Sanctuary” for Horsemeat Disco’s Love and Dancing; the track was produced by Collás and Luke Solomon. In 2022, the band appeared on “Try Again,” from JKriv’s EP of the same name, produced by Collás and JKriv. The 2023 EP Burning Bridges arrived via Brooklyn label Razor-N-Tape. The band signed with New York’s Nublu Records in late 2024 and released its first single for the label, “We Are Worlds Away,” in July 2025.
