Indie Jazz Artists

Indie jazz gives jazz improvisation a looser relationship with genre boundaries, drawing contemporary jazz, soul, funk, hip hop and electronic-minded production into the same frame. Its records often favour strong rhythmic feel, bass-led grooves and detailed studio texture alongside piano, drums and horn-led interplay.

Yussef Dayes and Alfa Mist illustrate two sides of the approach: Dayes centres agile, polyrhythmic drumming, while Mist's work often leans toward melodic piano writing and hip hop-informed pulse. Compared with nu jazz, indie jazz is less tied to club-oriented electronics; compared with straight-ahead jazz, it more readily treats beat-making, soul harmony and crossover songwriting as part of the music's language.
