References to Nonesuch Records Inc. refer to the company identity, not the label.
Elektra indicates that Elektra Records was founded by Jac Holzman in 1950. Under his guidance, Nonesuch was established in 1963 as a budget classical label in partnership with large classical record companies in Britain and France without direct distribution in North America. Bill Harvey crafted the packaging, marketing releases as "Recordings at the Price of a Quality Paperback." Nonesuch grew to include an extensive catalog of diverse music worldwide and world-premiere recordings of modern avant-garde, electronic, and computer music composers.
Warner Communications Inc. offers a comprehensive outline of ownership and identity changes from 1969 onward. As an Elektra division, Nonesuch was acquired by Warner Communications (then Kinney/WEA) in 1970. Releases from Elektra-based labels like Elektra, Nonesuch, and Asylum Records often note this affiliation as "A Division Of Warner Communications Inc." (Warner Communications).
Elektra/Asylum Records notes that Elektra and Asylum Records merged in August 1973 to form Elektra/Asylum Records and Elektra/Asylum/Nonesuch Records label identities.
The identity Elektra Nonesuch was used for certain releases between 1987 and 1995. Catalog entries for "Nonesuch" or "Nonesuch Records" persisted during this period.
In 2004, a further merger of Elektra and Atlantic labels occurred. Since then, Nonesuch has been a sub-label of Warner Bros. Records within the Warner Music Group, continuing to use the Elektra UPC prefix and numbering system.
