Brownswood Recordings
British label launched in 2006 by Gilles Peterson to promote artists he believed warranted more attention.
The label continues from the first Brownswood Records imprint, which was a side-label of Talkin' Loud (a Mercury division) – probably the most influential label associated with Gilles Peterson – which released material from Japanese artists in the mid-1990s, mainly from United Future Organization.
The label is inspired by the Brownswood Basement sessions Gilles conducted every few months on his BBC Radio 1 'Worldwide' show. These sessions revisited the roots of modern jazz-influenced dancefloor music by featuring records (usually original vinyl pressings) that continue to inspire today's musicians and producers.
This label showcases some of these new artists, musicians, and producers, serving as an outlet for those who are somewhat different or unique and might have been ignored by most labels. It also provides a home to his Cuban-inspired Gilles Peterson's Havana Cultura Band and Brazilian-inspired Sonzeira projects.
