Tru Thoughts

Tru Thoughts is a British independent record label associated with a wide-ranging blend of jazz, hip hop, soul, funk, electronic music and related styles, a mix it has described as “jazzbreakshiphopsoulfunkbeatsounds.” Founded in Brighton in 1999, the label has built an identity around genre-crossing releases that move between club-oriented production and live-instrument traditions, drawing on jazz, funk and soul alongside hip hop and electronic approaches. Its catalogue also reflects an openness to newer UK sounds such as grime, as well as tropical influences, without narrowing to a single scene or format.

The label was founded by Robert Luis and Paul Jonas, with Luis handling A&R and Jonas acting as label manager. Tru Thoughts grew out of Brighton’s club culture and the founders’ involvement in local nights, including the phonic:hoop events that helped establish its early profile. The label’s beginnings were modest, initially operated from a small home setup, before later moving into dedicated office space. By its first decade, Tru Thoughts had become established enough to mark a 10th anniversary in 2009.

Across its output, Tru Thoughts has released a substantial body of work, including over 200 LPs spanning electronic, funk, soul, hip hop, jazz, tropical and grime, among other styles. Artists associated with the label illustrate this breadth, from the soul and jazz-informed work of Alice Russell to more contemporary, groove-driven and beat-led projects such as Ebi Soda, Tara Lily and Kuna Maze. Newer names including Steven Bamidele, WheelUP, Catpack and Bruk Rogers also reflect the label’s continued interest in hybrid forms that sit between band dynamics, songwriting and producer-led music.

Based in Brighton, Tru Thoughts remains closely identified with the city where it began, and with a musical outlook shaped by DJ culture and club nights as much as by album-focused listening. Its releases and roster point to a label built around stylistic range rather than a single genre, with a consistent emphasis on rhythm, bass, and the overlap between dancefloor energy and musicianship.
