Interscope Records is an American record label known for an artist-centered approach that, from its earliest years, emphasized creative autonomy and strong A&R leadership. The label is based in Santa Monica, California, and operates under Universal Music Group through the Interscope Geffen A&M imprint.

The label was founded in late 1990 by Jimmy Iovine and Ted Field as a $20 million joint venture with Atlantic Records of Warner Music Group and Interscope Communications. Interscope’s structure differed from many traditional labels of the period by placing decision-making power with its A&R staff and allowing artists and producers full creative control. This philosophy helped define its identity and positioned the company to move quickly on emerging sounds and high-profile projects.

Interscope’s early commercial momentum came quickly: its first hit records arrived in under a year, and the label reached profitability by 1993. Over time, it became associated with major pop and contemporary music releases, including work with artists such as Lady Gaga, whose presence in the roster reflects the label’s reach in mainstream pop alongside its broader contemporary catalog.

Jimmy Iovine served as chair and CEO until May 2014, when he was succeeded by John Janick. Under Universal Music Group’s ownership, Interscope continues to function as part of the Interscope Geffen A&M umbrella while maintaining the artist- and A&R-driven identity described in its founding model.
