OneRepublic
OneRepublic broke through after an early setback, turning from an unsigned MySpace success into an international pop-rock act with “Apologize.” Formed in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 2002, the band built momentum through shows around Los Angeles before signing to Velvet Hammer, a Columbia Records imprint. They recorded a debut album with producer Greg Wells in 2005, but Columbia dropped the group two months before its planned June 2006 release. Their profile on MySpace then helped bring them to the attention of Timbaland.
Signed to Timbaland’s Mosley Music Group, then an Interscope imprint, OneRepublic released Dreaming Out Loud in November 2007. The album entered the US chart at number 14 and was later certified Platinum by the RIAA. Timbaland remixed “Apologize,” taking the song to number one in 16 countries and earning the band a Grammy Award nomination. Follow-up single “Stop and Stare” also found major international success. Their second album, Waking Up (2009), produced “All the Right Moves,” “Secrets,” “Marchin On,” and “Good Life,” the latter reaching the US Billboard Hot 100 top ten.
The band’s third album, Native, arrived in 2013 and became their highest-charting release on the Billboard 200, peaking at number four. “If I Lose Myself” reached the top ten in several countries, while “Counting Stars” became one of OneRepublic’s biggest singles. It reached the top five in Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States, where it peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, tying the US peak of “Apologize.”
OneRepublic followed with Oh My My in 2016, preceded by “Wherever I Go” and “Kids.” Critics and the band identified the record as a change in sound from its predecessors. In 2017, the group released “No Vacancy,” “Truth to Power,” “Stranger Things” with Kygo, and “Rich Love” with Seeb. Their fifth studio album, Human, was released in 2021, followed by Artificial Paradise in 2024. The current lineup consists of Ryan Tedder on lead vocals, piano and tambourine; Zach Filkins on lead guitar, viola and backing vocals; Drew Brown on rhythm guitar and backing vocals; Brent Kutzle on bass, cello and backing vocals; Eddie Fisher on drums and percussion; and Brian Willett on keyboards, synthesizer, piano and backing vocals.
