Flume

Flume, the stage name of Harley Edward Streten, brought future bass into wider view with a run of textured, beat-driven electronic releases that moved between club music, pop songwriting and more experimental production. Born in Sydney on 5 November 1991, Streten began producing music at 13 and initially made house tracks under the alias HEDS. In 2011, he was discovered by the Australian electronic label Future Classic after submitting early work to one of its competitions.

His 2012 debut album, Flume, received positive reviews, topped the ARIA Albums Chart and was certified double platinum in Australia. The record included collaborations with How to Dress Well and Chet Faker, and introduced a style built from fractured rhythms, spacious synths and sharply edited vocal samples. Flume also developed a substantial remix catalogue, reworking songs by Lorde, Sam Smith, Arcade Fire, Hermitude and Disclosure.

Flume’s second studio album, Skin, arrived in 2016 and again reached number one on the ARIA Albums Chart. He described it as “headphone music,” distinguishing it from the festival-focused material associated with his earlier rise. Its lead single, “Never Be Like You,” featuring Kai, became his first Australian number-one single and brought international attention to the album. Skin won Best Dance/Electronic Album at the 2017 Grammy Awards, while “Never Be Like You” was nominated for Best Dance Recording. The album also earned him multiple ARIA Awards.

Following Skin, he issued the B-side collections Skin Companion EP 1 in November 2016 and Skin Companion EP 2 in February 2017. A collection of remixes from the album followed in April 2017, and “Hyperreal” was later added to the second companion EP. In 2019, Flume released the mixtape Hi This Is Flume, which received positive reviews. His third studio album, Palaces, was released in May 2022. He followed it with the mixtapes Things Don't Always Go the Way You Plan in February 2023 and Arrived Anxious, Left Bored in May 2023.
