FKA twigs
Tahliah Barnett, born January 16, 1988, and known by her stage name FKA twigs (with "FKA" rumored, but refuted, to stand for "Formerly Known As"), is a British dancer, director, composer, singer, and producer.
She began her musical journey with ballet and singing on tracks in a Jamaican Club. Her electronic, haunting music is akin to artists like Björk, Portishead, The xx, Tricky, and Massive Attack.
Before launching her music career, she was a highly sought-after pop-video dancer in London, appearing in videos for Taio Cruz, Jessie J, Ed Sheeran, Kylie Minogue, among others.
Her initial extended play, EP1, was self-released on Bandcamp in 2012 under the name “twigs,” a reference to the sound of her joints cracking as she danced. EP2 was released the next year under her current stage name, after a band called The Twigs expressed concern over the similarities in their names.
FKA twigs collaborated with Arca (also a producer on EP2), Dev Hynes, Sampha, Paul Epworth, and more for her 2014 debut album, LP1.
In 2015, she released her third extended play, M3LL155X, born from a "spontaneous creative period" after her debut album. This EP, pronounced "Melissa," represents her “personal female energy,” but FKA twigs clarifies it is not an alter-ego.
Five years after LP1, FKA twigs released her second album, MAGDALENE, in 2019, after dropping the standalone single “Good To Love” in 2016 and featuring on A$AP Rocky’s track “Fukk Sleep” in 2018.
