The Chainsmokers

Pop

The Chainsmokers, a duo from New York City comprised of Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall, are known for singing on their own tracks—a rarity in the EDM scene—while also collaborating with guest vocalists. They rose to prominence with the 2014 hit “#Selfie,” and gained mainstream success with “Roses” and their debut EP, Bouquet.

In a 2016 YouTube video, they revealed plans to feature their vocals in more songs, which materialized with the release of “Closer” in July 2016, featuring Halsey alongside Taggart. This track became their most well-known song.

The year 2016 saw further success for The Chainsmokers, with “Don’t Let Me Down” and “Closer” hitting platinum and frontlining their EP Collage. They received three GRAMMY nominations, winning Best Dance Recording for “Don’t Let Me Down.”

After their GRAMMY win, they announced their debut album, Memories…Do Not Open, on February 12, 2017, which was released on April 7, 2017, followed by a U.S. tour.

In 2017, singles like “Paris” and “Something Just Like This” enabled the duo to achieve three simultaneous songs in the Billboard Hot 100's Top 10, tying with The Beatles and the Bee Gees.

After a hiatus, they returned in January 2018 with “Sick Boy,” the lead single from their second album of the same name. The album was created by releasing songs monthly, resulting in tracks like “This Feeling” and “Sick Boy” peaking on the Billboard Hot 100.

Their third album, World War Joy, announced alongside a 2019 arena tour, featured hits including “Who Do You Love” and the singles “Call You Mine” and “Takeaway.” The album debuted at #65 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart.

On February 24, 2020, they announced a social media break to work on their fourth album. Nearly two years later, they emerged, releasing “High” on January 28, 2022, followed by “iPad” and “Riptide.” These singles led to their fourth album, So Far So Good, released on May 13, 2022.

They concluded the So Far So Good era on April 13, 2023, hinting at “TCS5.” On April 21, 2023, they announced “Up & Down” with 347aidan, leading to their fifth album, Summertime Friends, released on October 20, 2023, using a strategy of releasing singles ahead of the album.

The duo has achieved over 50 million singles and nearly 5 million albums sold in the U.S. alone.
