Coldplay
Coldplay is a British rock band that was formed in 1997 by University College London classmates Chris Martin (vocals, guitar, piano), Jonny Buckland (guitar), Guy Berryman (bass), and drummer Will Champion. The name "Coldplay" originated from Tim Crompton, a student at the same university. Initially called Pectoralz, the band later became Starfish in 1997 before settling on Coldplay.
Upon releasing their debut album, Parachutes, in 2000, they were often viewed as a Radiohead imitation. Coldplay's sound—elegant, melodic, somewhat spacey, and dramatic—drew parallels to mid-1990s Radiohead. However, their memorable hooks, fronted by Chris Martin's emotional pull, and their adaptability allowed Coldplay to maintain their relevance. This is especially evident in albums like A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), which is regarded as more musically and lyrically mature compared to earlier work, and Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008), where producer Brian Eno's influence led to an expanded sonic palette. Both these albums won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album and included hits like “Clocks,” “Viva la Vida,” “In My Place,” “Violet Hill,” and “The Scientist.” Coldplay demonstrated rock elements in X&Y and experimented with electronics in albums like Mylo Xyloto, Ghost Stories, and A Head Full of Dreams.
Consequently, Coldplay became one of the most commercially successful bands of the new millennium, with over 80 million album sales. Despite this success, they faced criticism for their supposedly derivative nature, emotional lyrics, and their image as well-behaved Englishmen rather than wild rockstars. As a result, opinions on Coldplay range from viewing them as emblematic of the shortcomings of 21st-century rock to seeing them as a talented band with songs crafted for stadium performances.
