At 165 to 185 BPM, drum and bass gives DJ sets a rapid, high-pressure pulse: breakbeats snap and tumble above bass lines that are felt as much as heard. Tracks are built for movement, but their density also rewards close listening, with chopped samples, synthetic textures and tightly programmed drums often carrying as much detail as the melody.

The music emerged from the United Kingdom’s jungle culture in the early 1990s. Jungle supplied the breakbeat framework and bass weight, while reggae and Jamaican dub informed its low-end emphasis. Hip-hop, breakbeat hardcore, techno and house also fed into the sound, leaving drum and bass with a broad electronic vocabulary rather than a single fixed palette.

Its rhythm is the key distinction. Where house usually leans on a regular four-to-the-floor kick, drum and bass works through syncopated breakbeats, with snares, kicks and percussion shifting around the bar at far higher speeds. The bass is rarely just accompaniment. Deep sub-bass can anchor a track beneath restless drums, while heavier productions pair it with hard-edged synth work and samples. This separation of fast percussion from slow-feeling low end gives the genre its particular physical pull.

Drum and bass covers several sharply different approaches. Liquid drum and bass brings in softer melodic material and touches of soul, jazz or ambient music; techstep, darkstep and neurofunk favour tougher, more mechanical sound design; jump up puts direct, punchy bass hooks at the centre. Ragga jungle retains a closer connection to reggae-derived jungle styles, while ambient drum and bass reduces the pressure without abandoning breakbeat motion. Across those variations, the core remains consistent: accelerated drums, substantial bass and an arrangement that keeps rhythmic momentum in constant motion.
