Calibre

Dominick Martin, known as Calibre, is a Belfast-born Northern Irish producer and DJ whose work became closely associated with the development of liquid funk. The style was partly named for the distinctive character of his productions, which combined drum and bass rhythms with a broad electronic palette that has also included jungle, ambient, dub, techno and breakbeat.

In the early 2000s, DJ Fabio played many Calibre productions, including tracks that hadn't yet been released, on his BBC Radio 1 programme Liquid Funk and at Swerve club nights. Swerve had originally been known as Speed and was co-run by Fabio and LTJ Bukem. Those sets helped make Martin's music synonymous with liquid funk during the period. His 2001 debut album, Musique Concrète, included “Deep Everytime”; Fabio has said that Everything but the Girl were interested in remixing the track, but Martin had by then destroyed or repurposed the recordings connected to it.

Calibre primarily releases his music through Signature Records, his own label. From 2007, Signature issued the Shelflife album series, bringing together previously unreleased productions alongside other material. He has also released music through Hospital Records, V Recordings, Creative Source and Soul:R. Martin helped operate Soul:R with Marcus Intalex and ST Files; the imprint ceased operations in 2018 following Intalex’s death in 2017.

Writing under aliases including Version and Loose Dragon as well as Calibre, Martin has maintained a catalogue that reaches beyond a single drum and bass approach. UKF has reported that none of his productions have received official remixes by other artists, while Martin has said he isn't concerned about bootleg remixes. In 2019, he received the Critics Choice award at the Drum&BassArena Awards.
